Gun Safety and Injury Prevention
With the Vestry’s blessing, an informal group of parishioners, led by Marian Frank and Michael Earnest, is working to raise awareness of gun violence as a significant public health issue. Members of the group cover a spectrum of views from avid hunters and target shooters to those wishing for broad restrictions on gun possession. St. Thomas has also joined the Colorado Faith Communities United to End Gun Violence.
So far, the GSIP group has:
· Enlisted several parishioners in a rapid response team, whose members have attended legislative committees and contacted legislators;
· Arranged for parish members to share personal stories related to gun violence in Bold Living;
· Supported efforts to develop a city-wide focus on gun violence as a public health issue; and
· Begun a dialog with representatives of the Northeast Denver Islamic Center about the particular issues associated with gun violence in the African American community.
In coming months, the group will share important information about the public health consequences of gun violence both locally and nationally.
